Understanding the Immunization Schedule: What Vaccines and When?

Children don’t yet have a fully strengthened immune system and it’s important to help their immune system in any way that you can. One of the most important things that you can do for your child’s health is to make sure that they are protected by getting immunizations. When your child isn’t fully vaccinated, you’re risking their health, and it could cause severe complications in the future. There are many immunizations that your child will need and it’s important to have an understanding of what they need and when. Your pediatricians at Acton Road Pediatrics in Birmingham, AL, can explain child immunizations, their schedules, and what you can expect.

When To Get Immunizations

Immunizations will start at birth for your child. Their first immunization will be administered right after they are born, and this immunization is for hepatitis B. They’ll get their second dose between 1 and 2 months and their third dose after 6 months. With child immunizations schedules from your pediatrician in Birmingham, AL, you have room to wait, and it doesn’t have to be administered on a specific day. You can expect your child to receive most of their immunizations in the first few years of their life.

The next immunizations that your child will receive will be around 2 months old. These immunizations will include:

  • Diptheria
  • Rotavirus
  • Poliovirus

They’ll continue getting their next few doses of these immunizations over the next few months. From there, your child won’t need a new immunization until they reach one year. Once they reach a year, they’ll need measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis A. Other immunizations that your child will need throughout their life include:

  • Influenza
  • Human papillomavirus
  • Meningococcal
  • Varicella

Your child will need to continue getting their annual influenza vaccine every year and tetanus every 10 years. When your child is fully immunized, you’re making sure that they’re ready to fight off specific diseases that may come their way. This helps you avoid unnecessary doctor’s visits and helps your child avoid missing out on school or their favorite activities. If your child misses certain immunizations, you can talk to their pediatrician about creating a schedule to catch up on those immunizations.

When your child is fully immunized, they’ll be protected, and this can protect those around them who aren’t able to be immunized yet. You can help ensure that your child stays healthy as long as possible and that they can enjoy their childhood without the fear of dangerous illnesses.
